If your yard turns into a sponge every time it rains, you do not need magic. You need a path for water to go somewhere better than “right next to the foundation.” A French drain is one of the most homeowner-friendly ways to intercept water that percolates into the soil and move it away before it ruins your lawn, soaks your basement wall, or turns the side yard into a mud wrestling pit.
This guide walks you through planning, digging, pipe layout, and backfilling. It is written for DIYers with basic tools and a willingness to sweat a little. You will make a mess for a weekend, and then your yard will stop making a mess of you.
What a French drain does
A classic French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe near the bottom. Water seeps through the soil, enters the gravel bed, then finds its way into the pipe and flows downhill to a discharge point.
- It solves: standing water, soggy lawn areas, water pooling along a driveway or fence line, runoff that keeps soaking into one spot and never seems to leave.
- It does not solve: a low spot with nowhere to discharge, gutters dumping right at the foundation (fix extensions first), or a high water table that keeps the whole yard saturated for weeks.
Important: A French drain needs a place to send water. That can be a daylight exit on a slope, a pop-up emitter, a dry well, or a storm drain connection where allowed.
Before you dig
Do a quick hose test
After a rain, walk the yard and note where water sits. On a dry day, run a hose for 10 to 15 minutes in the problem area and watch where water wants to travel. Many drainage issues are really grading issues, not “bad soil.”
Check the easy wins
- Gutter extensions: Get downspouts at least 6 to 10 feet from the house (or to a solid pipe that carries water away).
- Re-grade small areas: A few inches of topsoil to create slope away from the house can prevent a lot of misery.
- Fix crushed downspout lines: A buried pipe that is collapsed is basically an underground fountain aimed at your foundation.
Call before you dig
In the U.S., call 811 a few days before digging. This is not optional in my book. You do not want to meet your gas line with a trenching shovel.

Plan the layout
Pick a drain style
- French drain to daylight: Best option if you have a natural slope and can exit the pipe on a hillside or along a ditch.
- French drain to pop-up emitter: Good for flatter yards. The emitter opens under pressure during rain and closes afterward.
- French drain to dry well: Useful where you cannot daylight, but soil must drain reasonably well.
Confirm you have slope
A good target is about 1% slope, which is roughly 1/8 inch per foot. Many installers aim anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot depending on the site. More is fine. Flat is not.
- Simple method: A long 2x4, a level, and a tape measure.
- Easier method: A line level on mason string between stakes.
- Fancy but fast: A laser level.
If you cannot get consistent slope to your discharge point, consider a dry well closer to the problem area, or re-route to a lower discharge spot.
Map the trench
Mark the route with landscaping paint or flags. Keep the trench line:
- At least several feet from the foundation if possible (you are managing yard water, not undermining footings).
- Away from big tree roots unless you enjoy surprise root workouts.
- Clear of sprinkler lines, dog invisible fences, and low-voltage lighting.
Quick scope reality check
- Long runs: If you are doing 50 to 150+ feet, renting a trencher can turn a multi-day workout into a single long day. You will still sweat, just less dramatically.
- Surface water: If the main issue is water rushing across the top of the yard, a catch basin tied into solid pipe is sometimes the better first move. French drains shine at soaking, seeping, and soggy areas.

Materials and tools
Materials
- 4-inch perforated drain pipe (rigid PVC with holes or flexible corrugated). Rigid is easier to maintain slope. Flexible is easier to snake around obstacles.
- Drainage gravel (clean, washed 3/4-inch or similar). Avoid limestone screenings or anything dusty that clogs.
- Non-woven geotextile fabric (not the thin “weed barrier” stuff that tears when you look at it).
- Solid pipe for sections where you are only transporting water (like from a downspout to the drain line).
- Couplers, wyes, and end caps as needed.
- Pop-up emitter or dry well kit if not daylighting.
Tools
- Trenching shovel or drain spade
- Pick mattock (for roots and compacted soil)
- Wheelbarrow and tarp (your back will thank you)
- Level or laser level
- Utility knife, tape measure, gloves, safety glasses

Trench size
Most DIY French drains work well with:
- Width: 8 to 12 inches
- Depth: 18 to 24 inches (deeper if needed for slope, but do not get reckless near the house)
You want room for fabric, several inches of gravel under the pipe, the pipe itself, and gravel over the pipe.
Rule of thumb: Aim for at least 3 inches of gravel under the pipe and 2 to 4 inches over it.
Cold-climate note: The drain itself does not need to be below frost depth for yard drainage, but any shallow solid-pipe sections or pop-up emitter connections can get cranky if they freeze. If you live where deep freezes are normal, bury outlet piping a bit deeper where practical and keep the outlet area clear so it can drain out.
Install step by step
1) Dig the trench
Dig along your marked line. As you go, periodically check depth relative to your starting point so the trench consistently slopes toward the discharge.
- Throw excavated soil onto a tarp to keep the yard from becoming a dirt confetti party.
- If the trench walls cave in, widen slightly and work in shorter sections.
2) Line with geotextile
Lay fabric so it covers the bottom and sides, with enough extra to fold over the top later like a burrito. The fabric is what keeps soil from migrating into your gravel and clogging the system.
3) Add gravel base
Pour in a few inches of clean drainage gravel and rake it roughly level while maintaining slope.
4) Lay the perforated pipe
This part is more nuanced than the internet likes to admit. Many pros install perforated pipe with the holes facing down, or clocked around 4 and 8 o’clock, because water rises through the gravel bed and sediment is less likely to drop straight into the openings. Other pipe types and manufacturers call for different orientations, especially if the perforations are shaped to pull water from above. Follow the manufacturer guidance for your specific pipe, and whatever you do, avoid low spots and sags.
- Dry-fit your sections first.
- Use wye fittings for branches, not tee fittings, to keep flow smoother.
- If using corrugated pipe, take extra time to avoid sags. Sags become little mud tubs over time.
5) Add cleanouts
If your run is long or has turns, consider a vertical cleanout (a wye with a riser and cap) near the high end. Future-you might want to flush the line or run a snake.
6) Cover with gravel
Fill gravel until the pipe is buried by a few inches. Keep the slope consistent. You do not need to compact gravel aggressively. A light tamp is fine.
7) Wrap the fabric
Fold the fabric edges over the top of the gravel like you are closing a sleeping bag. Overlap is good. Gaps are how soil sneaks in and ruins your hard work.
8) Backfill and restore
Backfill the remaining depth with the excavated soil.
- If you want max drainage at the surface, stop a few inches down and top with more gravel, then decorative stone.
- If you want lawn back, return soil to grade, then add seed or sod.

Discharge options
Daylight exit
Best when you have a slope. Run solid pipe for the last section if the pipe is exposed. Add a critter guard on the outlet.
Pop-up emitter
Good for yards without a convenient hillside. Install it at the end of a solid pipe section. Place it where water can spread out without flooding a neighbor or running back toward your house. You are solving a problem, not sharing it.
Dry well
A dry well is a buried pit (often a plastic chamber) surrounded by gravel that stores water and lets it soak into the soil.
- Works best in sandy or loamy soils.
- Struggles in heavy clay because clay drains slowly. In clay, bigger capacity helps, but expectations should be realistic.
Local note: Rules vary widely. Some municipalities do not allow tying into storm sewers without a permit. Many areas also require setbacks for discharge points and dry wells, including distance from foundations, property lines, wells, septic systems, and easements, plus minimum separation above the seasonal high water table. When in doubt, check before you connect or dig.
Common mistakes
- Not enough slope: Water that cannot move will sit and drop sediment.
- Using the wrong fabric: Flimsy weed barrier clogs and tears. Use non-woven geotextile.
- Using dirty gravel: “Whatever is cheap” gravel often has fines that pack tight and block flow.
- Pipe sags: Especially common with flexible corrugated. Take your time bedding the pipe.
- Discharging near the house: Moving water from one soggy spot to another soggy spot does not count as a win.
- Skipping downspout fixes: If roof water is dumping at the foundation, address that first.
Where not to put one
Do not run a basic yard French drain directly against the footings and call it “foundation drainage.” A true footing drain is a different animal and usually involves excavation to the footing, waterproofing or drainage board, clean stone, filter fabric, and a code-compliant outlet. If your basement is actively leaking, get eyes on the whole system before you start digging trenches like it is a hobby.
How to tell it works
- After rain, the problem area should drain faster and stay firmer underfoot.
- You may see water exiting the outlet during heavy storms. That is a good thing.
- In the first few rains, some settling over the trench is normal. Top off with soil and reseed as needed.
If you get no flow at the outlet during big rains, you likely have a slope issue, a blockage, or the discharge point is too high. A cleanout makes troubleshooting much easier.
Maintenance
- Keep the outlet clear of leaves and mulch.
- Once or twice a year, you can try flushing from a cleanout with a garden hose to move light sediment. For longer runs or stubborn clogs, backflushing from the outlet, a drain snake, or a jetter is usually more effective.
- Do not plant aggressive-root shrubs directly over the trench line.
FAQ
Can I install a French drain in clay?
Yes, but it is less forgiving. Use clean, washed gravel, quality fabric, and make sure you have positive slope to a real discharge. In heavy clay, a drain that daylight-exits often performs better than one that relies on soaking in.
How far should it be from the foundation?
It depends on your layout, but for typical yard drainage, I prefer several feet away and routed to intercept water before it reaches the house. If you are doing foundation drainage, that is a different project with different risks and details.
Should the holes face up or down?
Both are used in the real world. Holes down (or clocked around 4 and 8 o’clock) is common in gravel trenches to reduce sediment dropping into the pipe, but some pipe designs specify a different orientation. Check the pipe instructions, then focus on good bedding and steady slope so the pipe does not sag.
Do I need gravel or can I just bury perforated pipe?
Use gravel. The gravel bed is what creates a free-draining pathway to the pipe. Pipe alone in soil clogs much faster and moves less water.
Is 4-inch pipe enough?
For most residential yard drains, 4-inch is the standard and works well. If you are collecting from multiple areas, tying in several downspouts, or running a very long main line, you may need a larger trunk line or multiple branches. When in doubt, you can also add a catch basin and solid pipe for surface flow instead of asking one perforated line to do everything.
