How to Lay a Flagstone Walkway
Learn how to excavate, build a compacted base, screed a leveling sand bed, and set flagstone for a sturdy, natural-looking garden path that drains well and stays put.

Flagstone has that “it’s always been here” look, even when you just put it in last weekend. The trick is not fancy tools or a mason’s secret handshake. It’s a solid base, good drainage, and taking your time with the fit.
Below is the method I use for a durable, low-wobble flagstone walkway: excavate, build a compacted base, add a thin leveling layer of sand, then set the stones and lock them in with joint fill.

Plan it first (your future self will thank you)
Pick a width and layout
For a comfortable path:
- Minimum width: 30 inches (works for single-file walking)
- Comfortable width: 36 to 42 inches (two people can pass without doing the awkward shuffle)
- Wheelbarrow friendly: 42 to 48 inches
Lay out the path with a garden hose or rope so you can tweak curves before you start digging. When it looks right, paint the outline with marking paint or sprinkle flour as a temporary line.
Choose your build style
This guide focuses on dry-laid flagstone (stones set on a base, not mortared). It drains well, is forgiving for DIYers, and is easier to repair later.
If you need a walkway that must be perfectly rigid and weed-proof, a mortared install is an option, but it is a different animal with different drainage requirements.

Materials
- Flagstone (varied sizes make a natural pattern)
- Base material: compactable crushed stone (often called 3/4-inch minus, road base, or crusher run)
- Leveling layer: coarse concrete sand or paver sand (not play sand)
- Edge restraint (recommended): paver edging, steel edging, or pressure-treated bender board with stakes
- Joint fill: polymeric sand, stone dust, or decomposed granite (more on this later)
- Non-woven geotextile fabric (optional, see my note below)
Quick note on fabric: If you need separation over soft soil, use a non-woven geotextile. It lets water through while keeping your base rock from sinking into the subsoil. Avoid the cheap woven weed-barrier stuff here, since it can clog and cause drainage headaches. If you use fabric, put it under the base rock, not between rock and sand.
Step 1: Excavation depth (the part nobody posts on social media)
Depth depends on your soil, climate, and how perfect you want this to stay. Since I’m in Michigan, freeze-thaw is a real thing, so I like a beefier base. Also, local conditions vary a lot, so if your town has hardscape specs (or you have a neighbor whose patio never moves), take the hint and follow the local playbook.
Typical depths for a dry-laid flagstone path
- Mild climates, well-draining soil: 3 to 4 inches base + 1 inch sand + stone thickness
- Freeze-thaw or clay soil: 4 to 6 inches base + 1 inch sand + stone thickness
- Severe freeze-thaw, soft soil, or heavier use: you may need more than 6 inches of base and a geotextile for separation
Example: If your stones are about 2 inches thick and you want 5 inches of base plus 1 inch of sand, you’re excavating roughly 8 inches.
Stone thickness tip
Flagstone thickness matters. Very thin pieces can crack or rock unless they are fully supported and used in lighter-traffic areas. If your pile includes a mix, sort it by thickness and use the thicker, flatter stones for main walking lines.
Excavate and shape the subgrade
- Dig to your planned depth, keeping the bottom roughly even.
- Remove roots and soft, mushy soil.
- Create a slope for drainage: aim for about 1/4 inch per foot for reliable runoff on natural stone. If you are tying into something existing and you cannot get that much, do not go flatter than 1/8 inch per foot.

Step 2: Add and compact the crushed stone base
This is the make-or-break layer. Compacted base rock spreads loads, drains water, and keeps stones from rocking like a toddler on a sugar rush.
Install base in lifts
- Add crushed stone in 2-inch layers (called lifts).
- Compact each lift thoroughly with a plate compactor or hand tamper.
- Lightly mist dusty base with water to help compaction. Damp, not muddy.
Compactor tip: For longer paths, a plate compactor is worth the rental. Hand tamping is fine for small, short walkways, but it is slower and harder to get consistently tight, especially in clay soils.
Keep checking grade and slope as you build up. If you compact and it ends up low in a spot, add more base and compact again. Do not “fix” low spots by dumping extra sand later. Sand is for leveling, not for making up big depth differences.

Step 3: Set the edging
Flagstone likes to wander over time if it does not have boundaries. Edging keeps the outer stones from spreading and loosening.
When to install it: I like to set edging after the base is in and compacted, and before I screed sand. That way it holds the base where I want it and keeps sand from creeping out at the edges.
- Install edging along both sides of the path at the height that will hold the base and sand in place.
- Stake it firmly, especially on curves.
- Leave the edging just below the finished stone surface so you do not catch a toe.

Step 4: Screed a 1-inch leveling sand bed
The sand layer is your fine-tuning layer. Keep it thin, consistent, and undisturbed.
How to screed sand the easy way
- Lay two 1-inch pipes (or conduit) on the compacted base, parallel to each other.
- Dump sand between them and pull a straight 2x4 across the pipes to level the sand.
- Remove the pipes and fill the channels with a little sand, smoothing gently.
Important: Once you screed, avoid stepping on the sand. Work from the already-set stones as you go.

Step 5: Dry-fit the stones
Before you start setting stones, lay them out roughly along the path to get a feel for spacing and pattern. Mix sizes and shapes so it looks natural.
Good DIY spacing rules
- For a clean look: aim for 1/2 to 1 inch joints.
- For a rustic look: 1 to 2 inches is fine, but you will want a joint fill that can handle wider gaps.
- Try to avoid long, continuous seams. Stagger joints like you would with flooring.
If you need to trim a stone, you can use a masonry chisel and hammer or a diamond blade on an angle grinder. Wear eye protection and a dust mask, and keep kids and pets far away. My dog Wrench does not mind dust, but his lungs do.

Step 6: Set each stone stable and flush
Now the satisfying part. Place each stone, tap it in, check it, then move to the next.
How to set a stone
- Place the stone on the sand bed.
- Use a rubber mallet to tap it down.
- Check for wobble by stepping near the edges. If it rocks, lift it back out and adjust the sand under the low side.
- Check height against neighboring stones. Aim for flush. If you choose to leave a lip, keep it to no more than 1/8 inch, and only where it is truly intentional. Bigger lips are trip hazards.
- Check slope for drainage as you go.
Marcus rule of thumb: Fix wobble immediately. A rocking stone does not “settle in.” It just gets worse and annoys you every time you walk on it.

Step 7: Fill the joints
Joint fill keeps stones from shifting and helps discourage weeds. You have a few options, and the right one depends on your joint width and how tidy you want the path.
Joint fill options
- Polymeric sand: Great for tighter joints and a cleaner look. It hardens when activated with water. Important: with natural flagstone, joint widths and depths can be irregular, and some polymeric products need specific minimum depths and tighter joints to work right. Check the bag specs before you commit. If your joints are wide or deep in spots, stone dust or decomposed granite can be the less fussy choice.
- Stone dust (crusher fines): Good all-around option, easy to refresh. Works for slightly wider joints.
- Decomposed granite: Natural look, compacts nicely, easy to top off.
- Soil and plants (like thyme): Beautiful, but higher maintenance and not ideal for high-traffic paths.
How to apply joint fill
- Sweep fill into joints with a push broom.
- Compact lightly by walking the path or gently tamping near joints.
- Top off joints as needed until they stay full.
- If using polymeric sand, clean stone faces very well before watering so you do not leave residue.

Finishing touches
Blend the edges
Backfill along both sides of the edging with soil, mulch, or gravel. This hides the restraint and makes the path look intentional instead of “dropped in.”
Rinse and settle
Lightly rinse dust off the stones. Over the next couple of weeks, you may notice a few joints dip as everything settles. Top them off and move on with your life.

Base rock and sand
To estimate volume: length × width × depth. Convert everything to feet and you get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
- Base rock: add about 10 percent for waste and compaction.
- Sand: for a 1-inch bed, you will usually want a little extra since it is hard to keep perfectly uniform.
Flagstone
Order extra. Irregular shapes, thickness sorting, and the occasional break mean you will be happier with about 10 to 15 percent overage.
Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)
- Skipping compaction: If the base is not compacted in layers, stones will settle unevenly. Compact early and often.
- Using rounded gravel for the base: Pea gravel rolls and does not lock together. Use compactable crushed stone.
- Making the sand layer too thick: Thick sand behaves like a mattress and leads to wobble. Keep it about 1 inch.
- No drainage plan: Flat paths hold water, and water causes movement, algae, and ice. Maintain a gentle slope, ideally 1/4 inch per foot.
- Ignoring edging: Without restraint, the outer stones creep outward, joints open, and the whole path loosens.
Maintenance
- Spring check: After freeze-thaw season, look for rocking stones and low joints.
- Re-level as needed: Lift the problem stone, add or remove sand, reset, and refill joints.
- Weed control: Most weeds come from airborne seeds in the joints. Pull them early or spot-treat carefully.
FAQ
Do I need fabric under a flagstone walkway?
Not always. In firm, well-draining soil, you can skip it. In soft soil, it can help keep your base rock from mixing into the dirt over time. If you use it, choose a non-woven geotextile for separation and drainage. It will not permanently stop weeds.
Can I lay flagstone directly on dirt?
You can, but it will shift, sink, and grow weeds faster. For a walkway you actually want to keep, a compacted base is the difference between “rustic” and “regret.”
