It is usually a solid plan, neat wiring, and lights placed with purpose.   • Transformer location (near a GFCI outlet, protected from sprinklers)
  • Each fixture location
  • Approximate cable path
  • Where you might add lights later

Pro tip: If you think you will add lights later, run cable a little farther than you need and coil a small loop where future fixtures may go.

Size the transformer and wire

Wire gauge basics

How deep to bury

Depth guidance varies by manufacturer and local code. In many yards, cable is often buried about 6 inches in garden beds. In lawns and other areas that get edged, aerated, or dug into more often, go deeper if practical, and always follow the transformer and cable instructions for protection from physical damage.

Trenching steps

  1. Cut a shallow trench with a flat shovel. In mulch beds, you can usually tuck wire under mulch after cutting a small channel in the soil.
  2. Keep wire away from damage zones like where you edge, dig, or plant often.
  3. Leave service loops at fixtures and the transformer. A small extra coil makes future repairs much easier.
  4. Backfill gently, then tamp with your foot.

Safety note: Call before you dig if you are trenching in areas where buried utilities may exist, especially near the street or where prior owners did “mystery projects.” Even shallow digging can find surprises.

Connections that last

Most “my landscape lights stopped working” problems come down to a bad connection. Outdoor moisture is relentless.

Connector tips

  • Use connectors rated for direct burial. Gel-filled connectors are popular because they resist water intrusion.
  • Strip wire cleanly and fully insert conductors before tightening.
  • Do not mix copper and aluminum conductors.

Hook up the transformer

Pick the location

Mount or place the transformer:

  • Near a GFCI outlet
  • At least a foot above ground (or per the manual)
  • Away from direct sprinkler spray
  • Where you can easily access the timer/photocell

Connect the cable

  1. Turn the transformer off.
  2. Strip the two conductors on your landscape cable.
  3. Attach to the transformer terminals (common labels: COM and 12V, or multiple voltage taps like 12V, 13V, 14V, 15V).
  4. Tighten terminal screws firmly.

Voltage taps and voltage checks

Transformers with multiple taps let you compensate for voltage drop on longer runs. Short run near the transformer? Use 12V. Long run to far fixtures? You may use a higher tap like 13V to 15V.

Caution in plain English: do not “crank the tap” just because you can. Check the manufacturer’s acceptable voltage range for your fixtures, then measure voltage at the first and last fixture (or at least at the last). Too much voltage can shorten LED driver life.

Set the controls

Hub method

Multiple fixture leads radiating from a central point. Can work well, but it creates multiple splices. Splices must be top-notch.

Loop method

Cable goes out and returns to the transformer area, feeding fixtures along the way. This often helps even out brightness because voltage drop is shared, especially when the loop is truly fed from both ends and loads are distributed well.

If you want my beginner recommendation: keep it simple, but if you have a long walkway, consider a loop, split the run into two legs, or run two separate home runs from the transformer. Different paths, same goal: keep voltage up where it matters.

Night testing and aiming

Once everything is connected and buried, do one more nighttime walk-through.

  • Aim uplights so the beam grazes the feature instead of blasting straight at windows.
  • Stagger path lights slightly rather than lining them up perfectly. It can look more natural.
  • Hide the source when possible. Let the lit object be the star, not the fixture.
  • Check for glare from seated areas, driveway, and sidewalk.

If a spot feels too bright, do not assume you need a dimmer. Often you just need to rotate the fixture a few degrees or move it 12 inches.

Common problems

Some lights are dim

  • Run is too long for the wire gauge: upgrade to 12-gauge or split into two runs.
  • Too many fixtures on one run: reduce load or add a second run.
  • Use a higher voltage tap if your transformer supports it, but keep fixture voltage within the manufacturer’s range.
  • Quick check: measure voltage at the first fixture and the last fixture. If the last is noticeably lower and looks dim, you have a voltage drop problem, not a “bad LED” problem.

One light is out

  • Check that fixture connection first. Most failures are a loose or corroded connector.
  • Swap the bulb or fixture head if it is replaceable.

All lights are out

  • Confirm power at the outlet and that the GFCI is not tripped.
  • Check the transformer breaker or fuse (if equipped).
  • Verify the timer/photocell settings.

Lights flicker

  • Loose connection or damaged cable.
  • Transformer overload or failing transformer.
  • Water intrusion in a connector.

Maintenance

  • Clean lenses a couple times a season. Dirt and mulch splatter can dim output fast.
  • Trim plants away from fixtures so the beam is not blocked.
  • Check connections each spring, especially after freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Re-aim uplights as shrubs and trees grow.

Warm white or cool white?

For most homes, warm white (2700K to 3000K) looks natural and welcoming. Cool white can look harsh on landscaping unless you are going for a very modern, crisp effect.
