If you can build a basic wall and follow a recipe, you can build a solid outdoor kitchen. The trick is treating it like a tiny, weather-beating “house” for your grill and storage: sturdy frame, durable skin, and a countertop that does not mind sun, rain, and a spilled burger marinade now and then.

Below is my budget-first approach for framing, wrapping, and installing concrete countertops. I will keep the jargon light, the steps clear, and the expectations realistic. Your first outdoor kitchen does not need to be a magazine spread. It needs to be square, strong, and safe.

Plan it right (so the build feels easy)

Pick your “appliances” first

Everything starts with what you are installing:

  • Grill: freestanding cart grill, or a drop-in grill head that sits in a cutout.
  • Side burner or pizza oven (optional).
  • Fridge (outdoor-rated is best, but many budget builds use a simple cabinet opening and keep a cooler there).
  • Sink (simple is a cold-water bar sink; full hot and cold raises the complexity fast).

Get the manufacturer’s cutout specs or measure your exact grill and plan the openings around those numbers.

Important grill reality check: Many built-in grill heads require a non-combustible enclosure and or an insulating jacket, or they specify strict clearances to combustibles. Verify your grill requirements before you choose wood framing as your plan.

Choose a location that will not fight you

  • Wind: avoid spots where smoke blows straight into the house.
  • Level: the flatter the patio or slab, the less shimming and swearing.
  • Clearance: leave comfortable walk space. I like at least 42 inches behind the cooking face if people will pass behind you.
  • Combustibles: keep grills away from vinyl siding, fences, and low roofs. Always follow the grill’s clearance requirements.

Choose a build style

For a true budget build, pressure-treated lumber framing is often the cheapest and easiest for DIYers. Metal studs are straight and rot-proof, but the fasteners and technique are a little different.

My default: pressure-treated frame, wrapped in cement board, then finished with stone veneer, tile, or stucco. It is cost-effective and sturdy when done right.

Safety note: If you are building next to an open flame appliance, follow local code and the appliance manual. In some areas, combustible framing near certain grill types is not allowed without specific clearances, heat shielding, and insulation methods.

Budget materials that hold up

Framing materials

  • Pressure-treated 2x4s for the main frame (ground contact rated if the base touches masonry and gets wet often).
  • Exterior-rated structural screws (not drywall screws). Look for coated deck screws or structural screws.
  • Masonry anchors if you are fastening to concrete: wedge anchors, sleeve anchors, or Tapcon-style concrete screws.

Heat protection near grills

If your grill manual allows combustible framing, still treat the grill bay like a “hot zone”:

  • Use the manufacturer-approved insulating jacket if required.
  • Add non-combustible panels (cement board and approved heat shields) around cutouts where the appliance sits.
  • Keep pressure-treated lumber back from heat sources. When in doubt, add clearance and follow the manual.

Sheathing and wrap

  • Cement backer board (commonly 1/2 inch) for the exterior skin.
  • Alkali-resistant mesh tape for cement board seams.
  • Polymer-modified thinset mortar to tape and skim seams, and for tile or veneer installs.
  • Waterproofing membrane (paint-on or sheet) if you are in a wet climate or using tile or stone veneer.

Countertop base and concrete

  • Cement board plus a sturdy substrate (details below).
  • Concrete countertop mix or a high-strength bagged mix.
  • Helpful additives (optional): a plasticizer for flow without extra water, fiberglass fibers for crack control, and a bonding additive if your mix calls for it. Not required, but they can make DIY life easier.
  • Reinforcement: fiberglass mesh, galvanized welded wire, or rebar depending on thickness and spans.

Tools you will use

Layout that stays straight

Set your finished height

Most comfortable counter heights land around 36 inches, but outdoor kitchens can vary. The important thing is consistency.

Build your height backward:

  • Countertop thickness (often 1 1/2 to 2 inches for concrete)
  • Substrate thickness (cement board layers and support)
  • Framing height

If you want a 36 inch finished counter and your concrete build-up is 2 inches, aim for a framing top at roughly 34 inches. Adjust based on your exact countertop plan.

Snap lines and square it up

Use chalk lines on the patio or slab to mark the front face and ends. Check squareness by measuring diagonals corner-to-corner. If the diagonals match, you are square.

Framing the base

Build base “ladders” first

I like building two rectangles on the ground:

  • Bottom plate rectangle (sits on the patio)
  • Top plate rectangle (matches the bottom)

Then connect them with studs.

Stud spacing and bracing

  • Studs at 16 inches on center is a safe, familiar standard.
  • Add extra studs anywhere you have a big cutout (grill opening) or a countertop overhang.
  • Use blocking between studs to stiffen long runs and to give cement board edges something to land on.

Frame the grill opening like a window

Think “window rough opening”:

  • Two king studs on the sides.
  • Jack studs to support the header.
  • A header sized appropriately (often doubled 2x material depending on span and load).

Even though this is not a house wall, the countertop is heavy, and grill cutouts remove a lot of structure. Overbuild the opening a bit and you will never regret it.

Anchor the base to the slab

If you are on concrete, anchoring helps resist movement and creep over time from people leaning, doors slamming, and seasonal expansion and contraction.

  • Mark anchor locations, drill to the correct depth, and vacuum out dust.
  • Use anchors rated for exterior use.
  • Tighten snug, not “gorilla tight.” Over-tightening can crack masonry.

Michigan reality check: In freeze-thaw zones, water finds tiny gaps and expands. Keep the base out of standing water when possible, and seal your finishes well.

Built-in access and storage

Plan for doors, not just holes

You can absolutely do open cubbies, but doors make the whole kitchen feel finished and keep critters from moving in.

  • Leave openings square and reinforced with extra studs.
  • Add blocking where door frames will screw in.
  • If you are buying prefab stainless access doors, frame to their spec and dry-fit early.

Ventilation for gas is not optional

If you are using propane or natural gas in an enclosed base, you need proper ventilation per your grill and local requirements. Check the manual for exact vent placement, size, and total vent area.

  • Propane (LP) is heavier than air: it tends to sink and pool low. That is why LP setups commonly require low vents at the lowest point of the enclosure.
  • Natural gas (NG) is lighter than air: it tends to rise. That is why NG setups commonly require high vents.
  • Some grills call for both high and low vents, and many specify minimum square-inch vent area. Do not guess.

Utilities and permits

This is the part that turns a “fun weekend project” into a “call a pro” situation fast. A little planning here saves money and keeps your build safe.

Gas

  • Plan a shutoff valve that is easy to reach.
  • Use connectors and pipe materials approved for your fuel type and location.
  • If you are not comfortable with gas work, hire it out. Leaks are not a learning experience you want.

Electrical

  • Outdoor outlets should be GFCI protected with weatherproof covers.
  • Use outdoor-rated boxes and conduit where required.
  • If you are adding new circuits, follow local code and permit rules. When in doubt, hire an electrician.

Water and drains

  • If you add a sink, plan for winterization in cold climates (drain lines, blow-out, shutoff).
  • Drain routing can trigger code requirements. Keep it legal and keep it from freezing.

Wrapping the frame

Cut and hang cement board

  • Hang panels so seams land on studs or blocking.
  • Leave a small gap between sheets (manufacturer recommendations vary, commonly about 1/8 inch).
  • Use cement board screws rated for exterior exposure.

Tape and thinset the seams

This is the step DIYers skip, and it is the step that prevents cracks telegraphing through your finish.

  • Apply alkali-resistant mesh tape over seams.
  • Skim with thinset mortar.
  • Let it cure before waterproofing or finish work.

Waterproofing

If you are finishing with tile, stone veneer, or stucco, waterproofing is cheap insurance. A paint-on membrane over cement board helps keep moisture from living where you cannot see it.

Concrete countertops

Concrete counters look high-end, but they reward patience. You have two common DIY paths:

Option A: Pour in place

You build temporary forms on top of the wrapped frame and pour the countertop right where it will live.

  • Pros: no heavy lifting, easy to match an L-shape, fewer surprises fitting around walls.
  • Cons: messier, you need solid formwork and careful vibration to avoid voids.

Option B: Precast

You build a form on a flat workbench, pour upside-down, cure, then flip the slab onto the kitchen.

  • Pros: smoother top surface (it was against the form), easier to polish.
  • Cons: heavy. Like “call two strong friends and bribe them with tacos” heavy.

Countertop structure

Support rules I follow

  • Avoid long unsupported spans. Add framing under the countertop wherever you can.
  • For overhangs, be conservative. If you want a big seating overhang, plan for brackets or corbels rated for exterior use.
  • Use blocking to create a continuous support edge under countertop seams and cutouts.

A solid, simple substrate

For a pour-in-place top, you need a stable base to form against. A common approach is a plywood deck plus cement board, but plywood outdoors needs careful detailing. If you use plywood:

  • Use exterior-grade plywood.
  • Seal edges thoroughly.
  • Keep it fully wrapped and waterproofed so it does not wick water.

One small move that helps a lot: before you pour, lay a thin moisture barrier over the deck (plastic sheeting or building paper). It keeps the substrate from instantly sucking moisture out of your fresh concrete, which can lead to weak, dusty surface issues.

Some builders skip plywood and use a cement board deck supported by tight framing and blocking. Either way, the goal is stiff. Concrete does not like flex.

Pouring concrete (pour in place)

1) Build the forms

  • Straight, rigid form boards. Any bow will show in the finished edge.
  • Brace your forms like you mean it. Wet concrete is heavy and it will push. If the form moves, your counter will look like it had a long night.
  • Use a release agent or wax so forms come off cleanly.
  • Plan the sink and grill cutouts carefully. Double-check measurements before you commit.

2) Add reinforcement

Most DIY concrete counters do well with fiberglass mesh or welded wire placed in the middle of the slab thickness. Keep reinforcement away from edges to prevent rust staining or “shadowing” at the surface.

3) Mix and place

  • Mix to the manufacturer’s water ratio. Too wet is easy to place but weaker and more prone to cracking.
  • Place in lifts and work it into corners.

4) Vibrate to remove air pockets

You do not need fancy equipment. A palm sander (no sandpaper) run along the outside of the forms can help bring bubbles up. Tap the forms with a rubber mallet too.

5) Screed and trowel

Strike it off level, then trowel as it firms up. Do not overwork soupy concrete. Let it start to set, then smooth.

6) Cure slowly

Concrete likes a slow cure. Cover with plastic to hold moisture in and reduce cracking. If it is hot, windy, or in direct sun, protect it even more. Those conditions pull moisture out fast.

Cutouts for grills and sinks

Cutouts are where budgets go to die, so here is how to keep it safe:

  • Dry-fit appliances first if possible and confirm clearances.
  • Account for finish thickness (tile, stone, veneer) when sizing openings and face setbacks.
  • Protect edges around cutouts with additional reinforcement.

My rule: If the manufacturer gives a cutout size range, I aim for the middle and sneak up on the fit. It is easier to remove material than to add it back.

Finish options on a budget

Stone veneer

Veneer can look high-end fast. Use a mortar rated for veneer and follow the lath requirements if your veneer system needs it.

Tile

Outdoor tile success depends on proper substrate prep and waterproofing. Choose frost-rated tile in cold climates and use exterior-rated grout.

Stucco

Stucco is affordable and clean-looking, but the layers matter. Follow a proper base coat and reinforcement schedule so it does not crack like a dried-up lake bed.

Movement and freeze-thaw

Outdoors moves. Heat, cold, sun, shade, and moisture all pull on your finishes.

  • Tile and stone need movement joints: include soft joints where your layout changes direction, at long runs, and where materials meet (counter to wall, veneer to slab). Follow your mortar and grout system guidance for exterior expansion joints.
  • Use exterior-rated products: mortar, grout, and sealers that are approved for freeze-thaw conditions if you live where winter bites.

Weatherproofing details

  • Seal the concrete: Use a countertop sealer rated for food-contact surfaces if you prep food directly on it. Reseal as needed based on the product. Many are an annual check and recoat situation, especially outdoors.
  • Slope the top slightly: A tiny slope away from the house helps water run off instead of pooling.
  • Keep wood from wicking water: Avoid direct wood-to-soil contact and seal any exposed edges.
  • Use stainless or coated fasteners: Rust streaks make a new build look old fast.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the grill manual: wrong clearances, wrong venting, and expensive do-overs.
  • Not anchoring the base: the kitchen creeps, tile cracks, doors bind.
  • Weak framing around grill openings: sagging counters and wobbly faces.
  • Skipping seam tape on cement board: cracks show up in your finish.
  • Overwatering the concrete: easier pour now, more cracks later.
  • Flimsy forms: bowed edges and a countertop that looks “handmade” in the wrong way.
