What to look for

  • Real wood or sturdy plywood over particleboard. Particleboard swells if water looks at it funny.
  • Solid frame and tight joints. Wiggle it. If it racks side-to-side, walk away unless you want extra reinforcement work.
  • Height that works. Typical finished vanity height (floor to countertop) is often about 34 to 36 inches. Older homes and kid-friendly baths can run lower. If you are using a vessel sink, remember you are stacking height on top of height. The goal is comfortable hand-washing, not shoulder day.
  • Depth that fits your bath. Many dressers are 18 to 20 inches deep, which is great for small baths. Just make sure you can still open the door and walk past it.
  • Room for plumbing. You need a path for the drain, the P-trap, and the supply lines inside the cabinet area.

  • Drop-in sinks are very DIY-friendly and hide slight cutout imperfections.
  • Undermount sinks typically pair with stone or solid-surface counters. Undermounting to a wood top is usually a bad time unless it is engineered, sealed perfectly, and you accept higher risk from wood movement and water.
  • Vessel sinks can work great on a dresser top but often require a taller faucet or a wall-mount faucet.
  • Wall-mount faucets reduce drilling through the top, but they require in-wall plumbing. Not a beginner Saturday afternoon add-on.

Step 1: Plan your layout

Most mistakes happen before a tool turns on. Here is the layout order I use.

  1. Pick a fixed reference. Usually the side wall. Measure from that wall every time so you do not stack tiny errors into one big problem.
  2. Find your drain centerline. Measure from the reference wall to the center of the drain stub-out. Transfer that measurement to the wall behind where the dresser will sit. Mark it on painter’s tape so you can adjust without leaving a crime scene on your paint.
  3. Mark your water supplies. Do the same for hot and cold shutoff valves.
  4. Confirm sink placement. Centering the sink on the dresser usually looks best, but plumbing location may push you a bit. It is okay. Symmetry is nice, functional is better.
  5. Choose a countertop plan.
    • Using the existing dresser top is possible if it is solid wood and you are committed to sealing it thoroughly.
    • Adding a separate countertop (even a simple wood top) often looks cleaner and gives you a better waterproof layer.

Step 2: Create the cavity

A dresser is basically a stack of drawers. A vanity is basically a big plumbing cave. Your job is to convert one into the other without losing strength.

Common approach

  • Top drawers become false fronts or shallow drawers that look normal from the outside but are modified behind the face to clear the sink and drain.
  • Lower drawers stay functional, sometimes with a U-shaped notch to clear the trap if plumbing sits low.

How to modify the top section

  1. Remove all drawers and take a hard look at what is structural. Some center dividers and stretchers are doing real work.
  2. Reinforce before you remove structural pieces. Add 1x2 or 1x3 cleats along inside corners and across the front and back, screwed and glued, to keep the box stiff.
  3. If you must remove a center divider, replace its strength with bracing (a new rail, corner blocks, or a plywood panel inside the frame).
  4. Decide which drawer faces you want to keep as stationary fronts. Typically the top one or two faces.
  5. Build a simple support rail system inside for a false front. This can be as basic as cleats and a couple screws from inside.

Pro tip: Save the drawer boxes you remove until the end. They are great donor wood for patching, making cleats, or rebuilding a shorter drawer.

Step 3: Cut plumbing access

You usually need openings for the drain and two supply lines. The cleanest method is to cut access in the back panel, and sometimes in a shelf or drawer box.

Marking

  • Set the dresser in place (or as close as you can) and mark where the drain and supplies land.
  • Give yourself extra wiggle room. Plumbing is never perfectly centered, and shutoff valves love to be in the way.

Cutting

  1. Drill starter holes.
  2. Use a jigsaw or oscillating tool to cut your openings.
  3. Sand the cut edges smooth.
  4. Seal raw wood edges with primer or finish later. Raw edges inside a vanity are prime swelling territory.

Step 4: Add or prep the top

This is the part everyone sees. It also takes the most water abuse.

Option A: Add a new top

  • Wood top (butcher block or laminated boards): warm and DIY-friendly, must be sealed extremely well.
  • Stone or solid surface: best water resistance, heavier, usually purchased cut to size.
  • Laminate: budget friendly and pretty water resistant when seams are treated right.

Attach the top with screws from inside the dresser into the top, using elongated holes or figure-eight fasteners if the top is solid wood (so it can move seasonally without cracking).

If your walls are not perfectly straight (they are not), you may need to scribe the back edge of the top or the dresser to fit, or trim the baseboard so the dresser can sit flush. Plan for that before you celebrate your “perfect” measurements.

Option B: Use the existing dresser top

If you keep the original top, you need to flatten it, fill cracks, and commit to a true bathroom-grade finish. If the top is veneer with lifting edges, consider replacing it.

Step 5: Cut sink and faucet holes

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. This is the no going back step.

For a drop-in sink

  1. Use the sink’s paper template. If it did not come with one, trace the rim and then measure the manufacturer’s recommended cut-in line.
  2. Drill a starter hole inside the cut line.
  3. Cut with a jigsaw, staying just shy of the line, then sneak up on it with sanding.
  4. Dry-fit the sink. It should drop in without forcing.

For a vessel sink

  • Often you only need a drain hole through the top, plus faucet holes (or a single hole) depending on faucet type.
  • Confirm drain hole size with the sink and drain manufacturer, not guesswork.

Safety note: Wear eye protection and hearing protection. Clamp the work if you are cutting the top off the dresser. A jigsaw can jump and leave you with a new design feature.

Step 6: Waterproof everything

If you do nothing else extra, do this. Bathrooms create repeated small water events, not a single dramatic flood. Over time, those little splashes ruin unprotected wood.

Where to focus

  • Top surface, especially around sink and faucet holes
  • Any seams between countertop and dresser
  • Inside bottom panel of the vanity (drips happen)
  • All raw cut edges

Finish options that hold up

  • Paint route: Quality bonding primer + a durable cabinet paint. Only add a clear coat if the paint manufacturer recommends it. Some clears and some paints hate each other and will peel out of spite.
  • Natural wood route: Stain (optional) + a water-resistant clear coat. Look for products commonly used on bar tops or marine applications. Apply multiple coats and respect cure times.

For extra sanity, line the vanity floor with a peel-and-stick tray liner or add a small drip tray. You want leaks to be obvious and easy to clean, not silently soaking into wood.

After finishing, run a bead of 100% silicone around the sink rim (drop-in) and where the countertop meets the wall and vanity top. Leave a tiny expansion gap for wood tops, then caulk it. Silicone is your tiny, flexible moat.

Step 7: Install and connect

Plumbing feels intimidating until you remember it is mostly just “do not cross-thread plastic” and “do not overtighten.” If you are not comfortable, it is perfectly fine to have a plumber do final connections after you build the vanity.

Also, quick reality check: some jurisdictions require permits or a licensed plumber for certain plumbing changes. If you are moving drain locations, changing valve types, or opening walls, check your local rules before you get attached to your plan.

Basic sequence

  1. Install faucet on the countertop or sink (whichever your sink style uses).
  2. Set sink in place (silicone as needed).
  3. Install drain assembly.
  4. Connect P-trap to drain and wall stub-out. Make sure you have clearance and the trap arm slope is correct.
  5. Connect hot and cold supply lines to shutoff valves.
  6. Turn water on slowly and check for leaks with a dry paper towel at every connection.

Step 8: Anchor and level

Dressers are meant to sit on the floor. Vanities should be stable and not tip if a kid (or an adult, no judgment) leans on the counter.

  • Level it with shims under the feet or base.
  • Anchor to studs through the back rail or a reinforcing strip you add inside the top back area.
  • If your dresser has a toe-kick area, consider adding a simple base frame under it to spread weight and keep it flat.

Quick electrical note

If you are adding or relocating outlets near the vanity, make sure you have proper GFCI protection and follow local code spacing. Water and electricity do not need to meet your new custom cabinet.

Drawer and door upgrades

  • U-shaped drawer cutout: Keep a working drawer by cutting a U around the drain pipe, then rebuilding the drawer box sides with plywood.
  • False drawer front: Attach the drawer face to the frame with magnetic catches for quick access.
  • Add a tilt-out tray: That top fake drawer can become a tilt-out for toothbrushes if plumbing allows.
  • Upgrade hardware: New pulls are the cheapest designer move you can make.

Common mistakes

  • Not sealing cut edges: Prime or finish every raw edge, even inside.
  • Cutting before dry-fitting: Set the dresser in place, confirm wall valves and baseboards, then cut.
  • Forgetting P-trap space: The drain is not just a straight line. The trap needs room.
  • Using a wobbly dresser: If the base is loose now, it will be worse after you cut it up.
  • Rushing cure times: Waterproof finishes need real cure time before daily bathroom use. Dry to the touch is not the same as ready for splashes.
  • Ignoring backsplash or wall protection: If your sink splashes, consider a backsplash or at least a well-caulked seam and a durable wall paint behind it.

FAQ

Can I use a particleboard dresser?

You can, but I do not recommend it for a bathroom unless you are in a low-humidity half bath and you are meticulous with sealing. Particleboard and water are a bad long-term relationship.

Do I need to remove the back of the dresser?

Not always. Often you can cut neat access holes. If the back is flimsy cardboard, replacing it with thin plywood makes the vanity feel more solid and gives you a better anchoring surface.

What is the best finish for a wood top?

Look for a finish rated for heavy moisture exposure, like bar-top or marine-style clear coats, and apply multiple coats. No matter what you choose, keep water from sitting around the sink and re-caulk when needed.

Will this work with a granite remnant?

Yes, as long as the dresser is sturdy and level, and you add internal bracing so the weight is supported at the corners and along the front and back rails. Stone is heavy. Build like you mean it.
