Start by identifying the finish
The finish on your wood dictates how hard each method will be. Here is a homeowner-friendly way to think about it.
Paint (especially multiple layers)
Paint is usually the most time-consuming because it can be layered, brittle, and hiding surprises. Sanding creates lots of dust and can smear old latex into wood grain if it heats up. Chemical stripping can lift multiple layers at once, but it is messy.
Varnish, polyurethane, lacquer
Clear finishes can be thin and sandable or thick and plasticky. If you sand a thick poly, it often turns into little gummy rolls that instantly clog paper. Stripper usually wins for thick clear coats, while sanding is fine for thin, worn finishes.
Stain (color in the wood)
Stripping removes the topcoat more reliably than it removes stain pigment that has soaked into the wood. Sanding is usually what actually lightens stain, but it can also create blotches if you go uneven. If your goal is “back to raw pale wood,” be prepared for extra sanding either way.
Possible lead-based paint
If the piece is old enough, lead is a real possibility. If you suspect lead, do not dry sand it aggressively.
- Use an EPA-recognized lead test kit (where available) or assume lead and follow RRP-style precautions.
- Favor methods that reduce airborne dust: chemical stripping and careful scraping, or wet methods with proper containment.
- If you wet sand or wet scrape, contain and clean up the slurry. That paste is contaminated waste, not “just water.”
If you are working on anything that could be lead-painted and you are unsure about safe setup, pause and look up your local guidelines. Lead safety is not a “figure it out as you go” situation.
Sanding: where it shines
Pros
- Simple tools: sander, sandpaper, shop vac, respirator.
- No chemical sludge to dispose of.
- Great for flat surfaces: tabletops, flat drawer fronts, shelves.
- Easy to control the final surface for paint or clear coat prep.
Cons
- Dust, and lots of it. The dust is the hazard and the mess.
- Clogs paper if the finish is thick or gummy.
- Detail work is miserable: profiles, grooves, carvings.
- Risk of damage: rounding edges, sanding through veneer, leaving swirl marks.

Chemical stripping: where it shines
Pros
- Best for details: carved legs, trim, spindles, routed edges.
- Often faster on thick paint or thick poly.
- Less airborne dust than aggressive sanding.
- Often veneer-friendly when done gently (no heat, no heavy sanding).
Cons
- Messy: softened finish becomes goo you must scrape and wipe.
- Fumes and skin exposure risks, depending on product.
- Required cleanup (and any neutralizing if specified) can affect how stain or finish bonds if skipped.
- Waste disposal: rags and sludge need safe handling and may be hazardous waste depending on the product and local rules.

Safety: do not skip this

If you sand
- Wear a real respirator (P100 is ideal for fine dust). A paper mask is a “better than nothing” option, not a plan.
- Use dust extraction: connect the sander to a shop vac with a good filter, and empty the vac outside.
- Protect hearing and eyes.
- Watch for lead as mentioned above.
If you chemically strip
- Ventilation matters: open doors and windows, add a fan moving air out, and avoid stripping in a closed basement.
- Gloves: use chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile is common, but check the stripper label).
- Eye protection: splashes happen when you scrape.
- Fire safety: some solvents are flammable. Keep away from pilot lights and sparks.
- Rag safety: solvent-soaked rags can be a fire risk. Store them in a sealed metal container and follow local disposal rules.
My rule: If you can smell it strongly, your ventilation is not “fine.” It is just “tolerable.” Fix the airflow.

For sanding
- Random orbital sander (for flats) and sanding block (for edges)

How to sand off old finish
1) Prep the workspace
Lay down a drop cloth. Get your vacuum ready. If you are indoors, isolate the area and plan to vacuum twice.
2) Start less aggressive than you want to
If the finish is thin, start at 120. If it is thick and stubborn, you might start at 80 or 100. The goal is to remove finish efficiently without digging trenches.
3) Keep the sander moving
Let the sander do the work. Pressing down hard creates heat, clogs paper faster, and can leave swirl marks.
4) Do not sand edges like you hate them
Edges and corners are where people accidentally “re-shape” furniture. Ease up and use a sanding block.
5) Step through grits for a finish-ready surface
For most repainting: finish around 150 to 180. For a clear coat: often 180 to 220, depending on your product.
6) Clean thoroughly
Vacuum, then wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth or a tack cloth. Dust left in the grain will show up later like glitter at a wedding.
How to chemically strip old finish
1) Choose the right stripper
Read the label for what it removes (paint, varnish, epoxy coatings) and whether it is water-rinse or solvent-cleanup. Gel formulas cling better to vertical parts like chair legs.
2) Apply a thick, even coat
Most stripping fails because the coat is too thin. Brush it on like you mean it, then let it work for the recommended time.
3) Scrape gently, with the grain
Use a plastic scraper first to avoid gouges. For stubborn spots, a metal scraper can help but keep the angle shallow.
4) Hit details with pads and a soft brush
Steel wool or synthetic pads help get softened finish out of pores and profiles. An old toothbrush works great in carvings.
5) Do the required cleanup step
This is not optional. Some products require a water rinse, others require mineral spirits or a specific stripper wash. Skipping this can cause fish-eye, peeling, or finish that never properly cures.
6) Let the wood dry completely
Especially if you used water. Give it time. Wet wood and new finish do not get along.

The hybrid method: my go-to
Most furniture is a mix of flat panels and fussy details. That is where the hybrid approach saves your sanity.
- Strip carved trim, routed edges, grooves, spindles, and corners where sanders cannot reach.
- Sand the big flat areas after stripping to remove leftover residue and level the surface.
- Feather the transition zones by hand so you do not end up with shiny patches that reject stain or paint.
This approach uses each method where it performs best, and it usually reduces both dust and chemical exposure compared to going all-in on one method.
Veneer: extra caution
Veneer is thin, and it is glued down. That means you can damage it with over-sanding and with stripping if you get too aggressive.
- With sanding, use a light touch and avoid starting too coarse. If you see a sudden change in color or grain pattern, stop.
- With chemical stripper, do not flood the surface. Work in smaller sections, let the stripper do the softening, and scrape gently.
- Either way, avoid digging at seams and edges where veneer is most likely to lift.
Cost, time, and mess
Cost
- Sanding is usually cheaper upfront, but you can burn through sandpaper fast if the finish is thick.
- Stripping costs more per project because of the chemical, cleanup supplies, and disposal needs.
Time
- Sanding is steady work. No waiting, but more labor.
- Stripping includes waiting time, then a faster removal phase, then cleanup and drying time.
Mess
- Sanding makes dust that travels.
- Stripping makes sludge that drips.
Pick which mess you would rather manage, then set up your workspace to contain it.
Common mistakes
Mistake: sanding through veneer
Veneer is thin. If you see a different color or pattern suddenly appear, stop. Use chemical stripping or very light hand sanding and consider painting instead of chasing “raw wood perfection.”
Mistake: using too coarse a grit for too long
Starting at 60 grit on a tabletop is like using a snow shovel to serve cake. It works, but you will hate the cleanup. Start at 80 to 120 whenever possible.
Mistake: leaving stripper residue behind
Residue can block stain absorption and make paint peel. Follow the product instructions and do a final light sand once the wood is dry.
Mistake: rushing the recoat

Do I have to remove all the old finish?

Can I use a heat gun instead?
